East Door, Flavel House
I love the wood, but I think the checkerboard glazed or painted tile is a bit much. What do you think? I don't know if the checkerboard is the original design or a later addition. I did not go back to see exactly how it was made, but there are a few cracks and chips on the tile, and the color is on the surface. You don't notice the pattern at all from street level, because it's quite a few feet up a hill from the street.

Even after enlarging the photo I couldn't tell that it was painted. The only curious thing is that there is one corner, on fourth square nearest to us from the right, that appears to have the same pattern as the rim by the red strip up front. Generally, if this small space is the only place with this checkerboard tile, I think it looks rather retro and fun. And like that. Hard to be definitive without seeing the rest of the building, though.
@ Francisca, my mistake. The color could be glazed, not painted. In the original you can see cracks and chips in the tile.
I also like the retro feel to it though I wouldn't want it at home!
@Ciel, neither would I want it anywhere in my house... too busy. But a little porch on a suitable house, sure.
@Sheryl, I'm sure you know I wasn't trying to be nit-picky... And I forgot to say I love the door.
not too functional in that soaking wet climat--a great place to display muddy footprints.
It reminds me of the tiles in my grandmother's 1940s house. :)
This looks a bit strange to me as I'm used to see this kind of tile work on the floor of old kitchens, balconies or patios, but it surely makes for a great photo next to the beautiful door.
I rather like it.
Beautiful details.
I like it too. Although it does make my eyes go buggy. :=}
