Reflections, No Paint

This is what the radio tower and sky looked like today reflected in the river.

"A Piece of the Sky" by Amy Ryding

Astoria, Oregon ~ Photo by Amy Ryding

Hi, Everyone. This gorgeous image from Amy Ryding will, hopefully, help make up for my lapse in posting. CLICK TO ENLARGE. This photo is PANORAMIC.

I've been lax this week dealing with business stuff. Turns out it's time to build a whole new web store ASAP (mine is 17 years old), and that is a huge job. I'm also dealing with insurance stuff. Did you know that if most of your sales are online and you pay an employee $500 per month you have to pay Worker's Comp at the same rate as if you had warehouses and forklifts? Yup. Turns out, it's true. That's my rant for today. Enjoy Amy's fantastic photo! Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Purple Light on Old Bones

The Peter Iredale at Fort Stevens State Park ~ Photo by Amy Ryding

This photo was originally posted on Long Beach Peninsula Photo, the blog with the great subtitle, on April 21, 2013. Amy wrote, "The Peter Iredale wrecked on October 25, 1906. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. The Iredale has been on my photographic bucket list for a few months. Although it’s been photographed thousands of times over the past century, it still manages to inspire the imaginations of photographers. The day I went was no exception; there were at least seven other people photographing it while I was there."

Amy's blog is one of my favorites. I liked it from the beginning. Later we met and became great friends.

Fall Colors on Exchange Street

Astoria, Oregon ~ Photo by Sheryl Todd

I've interrupted our guest blogger today because I wanted to share the amazing colors I found this morning near Exchange and 18th Streets.

Astoria Bridge by Linda Fenton-Mendenhall

Astoria, Oregon ~ Photo by Linda Fenton-Mendenhall

Today starts a week of guest photos by Linda Fenton-Mendenhall. I love the red river as much as the salmon clouds.

Seagull City

Seagull City July 24, 2010

Now that we're having a few days of winter-like rains, it's nice to look back at the blues and greens of July. I took this photo from the River Walk near 15th Street.

Now You See It . . . Now You Don't

Post on the River Walk July 26, 2009

This is an older photo I took on the River Walk, and I've been meaning to post it for some time. I like the torn sign, the various contrasts, the bit of purple, the shadows, and the feet. And now, as of this past weekend, it would be impossible to take this photo again. The post is still there, but the pavement to the left has been resurfaced in a dark black. It simply won't be the same again.

Theme Day: Bright Colors

July 14, 2010

I don't think I have ever seen a ship come through here as brightly colored as the aptly-named Cardinal.

Colorful deterrent

Painted Gate at Pier 11, Astoria, Oregon January 12, 2010

This colorful gate is nailed shut at the moment. It can be found on the east side of the white building on Pier 11. Yesterday I posted the "Oregon Wild Products!" mural from the other side of the building. Can you tell it's been raining?

A new year, new journeys

Glowing Orange Ship on the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon Astoria, Oregon ~ September 16, 2009

This is for Lee of Bend, Oregon, Daily Photo, as he starts today on his Amizade Adventure.

As many of us are making Resolutions, you're beginning an amazing adventure in physical space as well as intellectual, emotional, spiritual. You'll be going by plane rather than by ship. And yet, may your anchor be a safety net, and not a tether; may there always be a warming glow at the center of your world; may the horizons await and the sky be limitless. Have a safe journey and an expansive experience. I wish you smooth sailing, now and always.

Winter shapes and colors

Building in Astoria, Bare Tree February 26, 2008

I'm going back into the archives for some of my images over this holiday, so (as with the recent snow photos) look for the correct date of the photo under the picture rather than at the top of the post.

I've always liked the stark shapes and the odd colors of this building between Commercial Street and Marine Drive.

Carriage house at 17th and Jerome

Carriage House at 17th and Jerome, Astoria, Oregon Yesterday I showed another side of this house with a large corner cupola (to the left, outside the current photo), and Mom of Three made the comment: "About two years ago, I saw a really old man puttering around out there. What's also great about that house is the carriage house there. It's in better shape. That place has it all. An amazing grassy front yard, views for days, and the architecture." "Views for days," refers to the fact that this house is perched at the top of 17th Street with an incredible view over the Columbia River and the town.

These are not fall colors. I took this photo on the same day in May as I took the pictures for yesterday's post. The lighting makes all the difference. The potting shed or tool shed is also interesting in that it is not separate from the house at all, but (speaking of corner cupolas) wraps itself around the corner of the house, covering part of two walls. It's all so intriguing, and I love the colors.

Morning light

Bungo Spirit, Ship in the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon The ship Bungo Spirit spent several days anchored beyond my office where I could see it most of the time. I love it when the sun's rays turn the ships' colors brilliant. Does anyone know why the prow curves forward in such an arc at the waterline? I don't. Does it rock less in the big waves of the ocean?

A taste of color

Even under overcast skies, you can find shapes and colors to brighten the day and enliven a walk up or down the hilly streets of Astoria's residential districts.

Deja Vu

Deja Vu is a thrift store with style. They say that if you wonder where all the hippies have gone, you should look in Oregon. It's true, a lot of us are here! I love the look of the window and the painted meters. The store specializes in clothing, but it's got lots of other goodies, too. And it supports a women's shelter and women's services. It's located at 1030 Duane Street.

I'm away this week and posting from my archives. I took this photo on April 10, 2009.
