Adventures on 8th Street

April 10, 2010

I hope we get some interesting comments from locals and visitors about 8th Street. Eighth Street is one of my favorites. It's fun for walking, and I feel like I've accomplished something when I get to the top. Every few steps, it's fun to turn around and look at the view. And no, the hill doesn't stop where it looks like it stops, you simply can't see any further up the slope from here. It's fun driving 8th Street, too. At about the point where the road disappears in this photo, it feels like you've gone airborne. No wonder the sign at Franklin and 8th says, "No Trucks, No Trailers, No Buses."

Looking back down 8th Street from somewhere near Franklin. That's the Flavel House behind the power poles. Since this is Goonies Week (25th anniversary of the movie), I'll note that the Goonies' Jail is behind the Flavel House (out of view). You can see the corners of the Clatsop County Courthouse and the Astoria Post Office.

A lot of cities out here are built on hills. I grew up in Seattle--certaintly built on enough hills. You surely learn about stamina when walking everywhere. Nice shots.

Super cool sunset shots on your previous post. MB

8th Street has always been a challenging favorite of mine. As a teenager, I was always more nervous about going up and down that street than any other--particularly the extra-steep block from Franklin to Grand. Astoria's hills are a fact of life, and one of its greatest treasures. The views you get of the river from almost anywhere from around Irving and above continue to be spectacular. I'm almost 3000 miles away from 8th Street and Astoria these days, but these photos bring me right back!

Ah yes, I do remember 8th Street - I just didn't remember the name of it! What fun to drive that street!

Are you going to get a picture of the Goonies' Jail? I'd love to see that one! Or any others!

Has it really been 25 years??? Wow.

This is an amazing street and, it seems, in Astoria, all roads lead to WATER! I could imagine kids making bad choices on this street, from skateboards to sleds to cars! Can you imagine????

A very lovely street indeed. I would like to ride a bike down it...so long as I didn't have to pedal back up it.

Re your comment on "gourmet dining" -- heh, heh...that's about as far from gourmet dining as one can get!

I live very near 8th street and have always wondered what all the tiny little steps are for? The rise on some of them is little more than an inch. Any ideas?

Just wondering.......;-)
