A hot tub would feel good right now. The temperature today never got above freezing; it reached 32 degrees and stopped, although the sun teased us all day. This cold is unusual for Astoria. Alas, the steam baths, established in 1928 in Uniontown, are not an option for warmth, as they closed some time ago and I've seen no sign of recovery. The sign looks fairly new and the reflection is nice. The facade above the window is torn away, but someone has painted the old brick wall a garish and unnatural red (not visible in this photo, but follow the link). They've been closed since I moved to Astoria, but I'll be patient. I'm waiting for them to open! Especially today. I posted about the baths once already, in September.

It's not that unusual to have multiple days of sub freezing weather here...it happens every few years--if this keeps up for a few more days you'll a lot of ice floating down the river
Yes I've heard you are very unusually cold at the moment, after that unusual sweltering heatwave last summer. Get yourself off into your own bathtub with some nice bath salts!
I have been catching up on your posts, very interesting as usual, my favourite has to be the road to WA. because I would love to go there right now! I also enjoyed the Lady Washington enormously.
Could there be anything better than a hot tub when it's freezing outside?
Maggie
It's gradually getting warmer here but that still sounds nice!
A welcome sign on such a cold day.
Shivering over here in Oregon's Willamette Valley as well! Frustrating to see that steam bath sign and NOT have it be open ;>) but the picture is interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Not so cold here but a hot bathtub is not unwelcome. I checked the link and I find those brick wonderful as I found them last September!
Would you actually use a public steam bath and hot tub? It does sound good, though, when the temperature drops. Our daughter and husband have a hot tub on their deck in the Colorado mountains they sit in it in the snow!
What a wonderful photo! It finally got cold enough here for that to sound good too!
Well, keep checking back in and let us know if it reopens.
Went there several times in the old days. Sat in the men's public and heard a lot of old Finns talk of better times. Thanks for this pix bringing memories.
Long gone and never to return. The times have changed.
Not really gone that long ago...:o) I never could feature going but knew families who took their kids! And it was the place for the men to gather for sure. Just think about it after a tough day or night or week on the ocean or river...ahhhhhh...but I spose it went when the fishing industry went bust, sadly.
I spent most of my youth taking steamers at this place. Dad started bringing me to "The Bullpen" at about age 5. I attended regularly until I was about 22 or so. Many beers were drank and many lies were told! Quite an experience.
