What's really strange is that although I'd walked or driven to the Astoria Column many times, it took me forever to realize what these odd symbols were about. I suppose it looks like a column once you recognize it, but I kept wondering if there were some mysterious fortress I hadn't heard about. I hope the tourists are smarter than I was. Once you've been here long enough to recognize the images on the street, they are superfluous. However, I like looking at them and feeling proud that I know what they are :-D

That's fun! Much better than what the Germans call a "sea of signs"!
How do you find your way in snow though?!
Actually, that's rather creative, although for some reason I thought it looked like a clown figure and I couldn't figure that out!
Maybe it's meant to be funny. Or funky!
Have a great week, Sheryl!
Good idea. Might not work here given the amount of snow at the moment but it'll soon melt again.
I have recently learned (via one of the grandkids) that the blue refectors in the street mean there is a fire hydrant near. Now I know how to find a column, yes.
I always thought they made the town look provincial and I was embarrassed by them. I think it over advertises the monument.
I figured it out right away---so I gave myself a pat on the back. Ouch! MB
They sure fooled me.
It would have baffled me too! Now I need to pay attention to see if there are marks such as this on the streets here. I don't think so...but I could be wrong. :)
Not a bad idea, but I have never seen something like this.
