This is Arrow No. 2, the boat that takes river pilots out to the big ships and brings them back. If you click on the image to zoom in, you can see who uses the buoy besides the ships' pilots. There are a couple of fat sea lions lazing around on the base of the buoy, and a seagull perched on top. This is the Columbia River side of Astoria. The pilot boats don't operate in the bay, although they are sometimes called upon to assist in unusual circumstances, such as in the photo I snapped for this blog's third day online.

A quite big boat indeed, it looks good even for the open sea. It's funny the way sea lions occupy the buoy...
Fun photo. Great shot of the boat but the sea lions and gull make it; and how nice to have these boats ready to assist in a crisis. That previous photo of the downed airplane is very dramatic!
Beautiful boat. When I enlarged the photo I'm sure one of the sea lions was waving at you. Lazy bones!
This is a nice picture of the Arrow. I like the way the buoy lines up over the "i" in pilot almost like a dot. It is a well balanced composition.
Excellent shot. MB
I've always wanted to ride in a Tug. Great picture :)
