The sea lions of Astoria

Sea Lions on the Dock, Astoria, Oregon These are Astoria's sea lions. Some call them famous, some call them infamous. Just don't ask a salmon how it likes sharing the same river.

You have more sea lions than we have seagulls! I can see haw someone doesn't like them. You have to tell us more about this tribe...

These are such interesting photographs. They are like puppies, the way they sleep together. But I'm not certain I would like sharing the water with them anymore than the salmon do.

Your photo suddenly reminded me of the sea lion problem they had in Seattle a number of years ago. I believe they were hanging around the Ballard locks feeding. Great photos Sheryl.

Excellent! I saw lots of them in Seattle, they are so plump!

Nasty things they are. There was a time in the not to distant past that California Sealions, like their human counteparts, didn't exist here. Now look at it. It aint pretty.

How cute. They really aren't all that cute, I guess, but certainly are fascinating creatures. I remember all the sea lions at Monterey in California. Looks like you've got just about as many there!

I imagine they think salmon are fairly tasty!

wonderful photo Tapirgal and such an interesting topic. Clearly an example of diminished predators, namely sharks and warmer water(global warming?)but to compare w/ too many Californians as one comment above suggested.
What's he smoking? Lucky he didn't mean too many hispanics, blacks or Jews. Maybe he wanted to preserve and protect the former Astoria "enlightened" Scandavian community from new ideas and the 21Century. Typical provincialism, thick-headed like a sea lion.

Nope, it's an example of what happens when you put those worthless monsters on some sort of protected species list and decimate the Columbia River gillnet fleet, wich has always been the most effective inshore marine mammal management option.

Luck had nothing to do with it. It's you who felt the need to play the tired old race card.

People are sick of these Californian trustafarians moving up here and trying to give orders. they, like the sealions, do nothning but lay around and make noise. Californians go home...and take your Sealions with you

My stepfather (Norwegian) used to get $15 a sea lion. Yes he would shoot them. They would come up and take a bite out of the belly of the fish and leave the rest, competing with his industry which was his livelihood for many years. The fish don't have much of a chance these days.
