Ocean Angel II

Fishing boat Angel II, Astoria, Oregon July 4, 2010

Although I took this photo just after noon on July 4th, we've been having a lot of days like this. Usually the sun comes out later in the day. One day the temperature reached over 90 degrees, which is an unusual day for Astoria. Yesterday a heavy fog bank rolled in around 5:00 pm. It's always interesting and usually changeable.

Fishing boats are busily going up and down the river these days to get to the ocean. The small boat is always attached on the back this way on this particular boat. I'm not sure how they use it while fishing on the ocean.

This is such a different mood from when you have a clear blue sky! And this is not a desaturated photo? Still, without gray days like this, the colorful ones would have less meaning. And I do like the view of the two boats.

Now I wish our sky could be like your 4th of July sky. I've just come out of a cold bath and am sweating again. 90° in the apartment and I'm liquidising myself!

I like the grey-whitish photo, I actually first thought that was a net at the back of a trawler!

I like foggy mornings! Great photos, like this one!

Perhaps they need that little boat in case they catch a really big fish?

When I first saw the picture, I thought the small boat was being towed!

Yea, Hilda I thought so!
The scene we couldn't see around us. Very interesting!

These type of fishing boats are purse seining sardines right now. Check out the river walk between 8th & 9th at night during the next few weeks and you will see an amazing amount of activity. That little plant ships out many millions of pounds of big fat sardines (12" long. The biggest and best are used by Japanese fisherman for bait to catch sushi grade tuna. The little boat is used to encircle a school of sardines with a net and then pull the line that closes the bottom of the net like a purse string.

The skiff serves as an anchor on the corkline-the boat lays the net out-so the skiff could not encircle anything-the boat lays the net in a circle and the skiff brings the towline/corkline to the boat. Also, the winches on the boat pull the purse line. there's no winches or powerblocks on the skiff to pull anything-it just holds the first end of the net to go out

Dreary but must bring a welcome break from the heat.

Very strange weather, here it was 90°F without the mist and the water. Love how the boat blend in the greyness and haze.

I too thought it was desaturated - until I realized that this was the Oregon Coast - and this is very common coastal weather.

I love the information Anonymous gave about the boat. Very interesting!
