The Fir on the Corner

Photo taken July 23, 2010

Age . . . 624 Years

The log in its shelter can be seen at the corner of 7th and Commercial Streets at the corner of the Clatsop County Courthouse, across from the post office.

Unfortunately, some people have chosen to deface the log, even on display. However, in many towns and cities, the markings would be much worse.

. . . a venerable old piece of history. Unlike on many such display logs, the tree rings are not marked as to what events took place at what points of the tree's growth. So we can only imagine what it lived through.

If only trees could talk! What stories this one could tell. Lots of rings there.

Jacob nailed that one. About the defacing, I can only think of the expression, "Youth is wasted on the young" (GB Shaw)... and "Forgive them for they know not what they do" (JC). Nice blog, Sheryl.

Oh wow. I am so glad this was preserved. This tree saw so much history!

But what really gets me is the weight. 61,000 lbs??? Wow. That must have been the whole tree, not this one part. But still ......

It's a true shame that most of the old growth trees in the Willamette Valley were logged off in the 40's and 50's. And before. And after. Shame on us.
