The Castle on James Street

Astoria, Oregon ~ March 12, 2011

It's easy to think of this stone building as a mini castle, but it actually plays some part in the water system of Astoria. There is a reservoir to the right and behind it, and a larger reservoir up James Street to the left of the photo. I've taken the picture standing on 16th Street, which changes names and becomes Williamsport Road as it heads around the jog and down the hill where the headlights are coming from. You pass the Western Oregon Waste facility and come out on Young's Bay.

"Western Oregon Waste" facility? My, what a fancy new name for what we always just called the "dump." In fact, we used to simply call Williamsport Rd. the dump road! Ah well - a rose is a rose - and a dump is a dump no matter what kind of fancy name you give it!

I wonder if this was the original function thought of for this mini castle... or if the architect had something else in mind. It seems to fit its environment nicely.

Of course it's function is what it was designed for. It houses the valves which control the water system-there's also some deep tanks in there too. I've been in there a few times and it's even cooler inside-it looks like something out of an old Boris Karloff Frankenstein movie--the interior stone walls aren't set as smooth and orderly as the exterior and it gives it a very rough midevil dungeon type appearance

Funky. My first thought was that it looks like a sawed-off castle! :-) I still think that but not I also think it may house some kind of water purification system...or maybe it's where the employees go to get away!

Looks a rather rainy, damp day that you took this.

So glad you're posting!
