Rain and Sunshine

In the picture there is the Astoria-Megler Bridge, the Wauna Federal Credit Union, and a hotel to my right. I was walking home from downtown Astoria, when I looked up at the sky and decided to take a picture. I could smell the fresh rain coming in and the nice sunshine about to be hided behind the clouds. I loved the nice sunshine, but was welcoming the incoming rain.

Astoria-Megler Bridge

I'm still in drive-by mode here. The bridge dominates so much about Astoria, including the views as we move about town. This isn't much of a photo, but it brings to mind several things. 

1. I get a feeling when I'm this close to the bridge similar to the feeling I get standing near a moving freight train - a sense of how huge and powerful it is. I don't know why a bridge feels "powerful" exactly, but it does. Does it feel "alive"? I think so.

2. In so many other places I've traveled to or lived, this much concrete in the sky means only that you're passing under a freeway. While their engineering and usefulness is also a wonder, they don't usually bring us to thoughts of awe and beauty. Our bridge can do both. I love living in a town where this monument is part of my life.

3. Something to think about: When the bridge was opened, tolls were collected to pay for its construction. At some point it was paid for and the tolls were ended. Can you imagine?

Marine Drive

This traffic light is where you turn left to get onto the bridge up ahead. It's the beginning of a block-long loop into the sky, and there is no turning back. It's kind if like when you get strapped into the roller coaster, headed for a wild ride. I love driving over this bridge, but you roller coaster fans can keep your adrenalin rushes, thank you very much! This is as close as I come to catapulting myself into the sky unless it's in an airplane.

Highway 101

For any non-locals who wonder what the relationship is between Astoria's two largest bridges, this photo shows it pretty well. Coming from Warrenton, we're approaching the part of Young's Bay Bridge that lifts on the rare occasion that a taller boat needs to go underneath. After you hit the traffic circle at the end of the bridge, a couple of blocks takes you to a traffic light. Go straight and you're headed for downtown Astoria. Turn left onto the bridge and you're on your way to Washington. (See map.)

It looks like the bridge is sitting right on top of the Holiday Inn Express. Not exactly, but it's very close! Some of you may remember the series of photos I took from the hotel in 2010. One of the images was my favorite "Astoria Daily" photo of the year. Here is the rest of the series:

We've come down from the Bond Street hill to the intersection of Bond Street and Marine Drive. Does anyone remember the sign on the marquee from when the hotel was first built? It said, "Where Sleeping  under the Bridge is. . . . " and I can't remember the rest of it! The sign disappeared after awhile. Maybe somebody thought it was politically incorrect?

(Aha! Michael E. McDaniel found it on TripAsvisor. The sign read, "Where sleeping under the bridge is a good thing." Thanks, Michael!)

Cutting the Whitecaps

Here's another photo from the afternoon at Dismal Nitch. It's not as blue as "Blue but Not Dismal," because I'm closer to the subject, although it's still quite a distance. This is the low part of the bridge as it approaches Washington. Where it passes under the bridge, the shipping channel hugs the Astoria side of the river, so this part of the bridge doesn't need great height.

Blue but Not Dismal

Dismal Nitch, Washington, was dismal for Lewis and Clark, but not for most visitors, who enjoy glorious views east, west, and back across the river to Astoria. Everything looks blue here. My lens had to cope with four miles of reflective river between Astoria and the visitor turnout where I stood to take the photo. 

They're painting the bridge, which makes for interesting drapery. Christo could possibly be envious!

Over the Hump

Astoria-Megler Bridge to Washington ~ December 2, 2011

I may have shown this view at some time in the past on Astoria, Oregon, Daily Photo, but it's always a thrill to see that wide expanse in front of you and wish you could drive 100 miles an hour over the hump and down the other side. Let me guess - I'm sure some of you have done it, but you don't have to admit it! Today we were just enjoying the view. The tide was low and the sand bar was in full view. On either side of the bridge you can just see dramatic ripples in the mud. I'll post another photo on another day showing them more clearly.

Sand Bar

I took this photo from the Astoria Column with a 12x zoom. This is definitely not how it looks to the naked eye from that far away. You can see Ilwaco, Washington, on the far side of the river. The shipping channel is off the photo at the bottom, and the tall points of the bridge are out of sight to the left. As you can see here, the ships' pilots have to know what they're doing. Here you can see a photo of the sand bar taken from the bridge.
