Sea of Lions

East Mooring Basin ~ May 2013

It's hard to resist posting occasional pictures of the local characters.  This was a mighty pride of sea lions and what a life!  I've never seen a creature enjoy napping as much as sea lions (and cats).

Sea Lions

East Mooring Basin ~ April 2013

Guest Blogger Jack Applegate shared this fun photo of Sea Lions kissing at the East Mooring Basin.  They are a loud barking bunch when they gather on the docks.  These guys seem a bit small compared to the usual boisterous bunch that typically hangs out.

Life Along the River

Astoria River Walk ~ February 19, 2013

The sun was out making a perfect day to hit the River Walk.  Love this view from the railroad tracks.  Lots of locals spend time along the River Walk. Young people have their first kiss here; families make it an outing; dog walkers show of their pooches here while old couples share a few smooches here.  There was a make-shift memorial near the Museum where a family mourned the loss of a loved one.  There have been wedding photos taken along the walk and celebrations enjoyed here. Tourists enjoy the barking sea lions while fishermen climb over their lumpy bodies to get to their vessels.

Do you have a special moment on the River Walk to share?

Snoot

Here's an in-your-face view of what was swimming around under the water in this post. Sea lions especially like the 36 Street docks where the boathouse was originally moored. You can find them almost any day if you walk out on the pier. However, I've spent a few visits chasing them around with a camera, and rarely gotten an in-focus closeup of one in the water. I'd have preferred to have framed its whole head, but I'm really not complaining. Say "Cheeeese" . . . er, "Salmon"!

The sea lions of Astoria

Sea Lions on the Dock, Astoria, Oregon These are Astoria's sea lions. Some call them famous, some call them infamous. Just don't ask a salmon how it likes sharing the same river.
