Astoria, Oregon ~ March 21, 2011
Although I took this photo back in March, the bufflehead ducks are still on the Columbia River. I'm not sure what date they usually fly away, but it's been so cold and rainy, I wonder if they feel that it's still winter, as most of us do?
I only recently noticed that the ducks' tails fan out when they swim. I have one photo, though not a close-up, of a tail fanned in flight. When I find it, I'll post it. I always enjoy seeing these small, pretty ducks each year, even though they are shy and get away from me and my camera as fast as they can.

What a little cutie - I love that fanned tail.
The best part? Look at that beautiful heart on it's back!!!
May I borrow this picture for Guest Heart Thursday sometime? :=}
Sheesh. I didn't see the heart till you mentioned it. Go for it! And for anyone who doesn't know about it, Clytie has a very interesting "Random Heart" blog!

Thank you! You will be seeing it soon!
I hear our rains are going to stop ... I certainly hope so. I feel a little bit like that duck myself (minus the heart on my back, of course!) :=}
I've never heard of a bufflehead duck. I've never heard of a bufflehead anything! You have some interesting critters up thataway.
Didn't Bigfoot come from the PNW?
It's a nice-looking duck. In South Florida we had mucky-ducks...really ugly.
Sorry it's been cold and rainy. But it will change.
Cool looking duck. I don't think I've seen one like that before. It's tail reminds me of a fin.
Now that is a cute ducky with a sweet heart and fanning tail! :-)
