One of my favorite flower finds this spring was this pot in the parking area outside the Astoria Co-op (Exchange and 14th Streets) containing checkerboard tulips.
The rest of the flowers and vegetables in the pot were a welcome sight as well.
Here in England these are called Snake's Head Fritillary when I was a boy they grew wild in the water meadow beyond our garden wall. Even then they were not at all common, probably much less common these days. I just looked it up and it was chosen as the county flower of Oxfordshire a few years back not that I knew, I rarely go back these days and now live in Yorkshire in the North. ReplyDeleteLike Halcyon, I've never seen checkerboard tulips. When you google for images, yours comes up on the third row. Snake's Head Fritillary also appears to be correct (and I say "appears" only because I know nothing of such things), but checkerboard sure seems apt. Lovely find!
